Obituary
Gorham, NY / Zephyrhills, FL — With great love and deep sadness, the family of Larry L. Edwards, age 84, announces his passing on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
Born on June 29, 1941, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, Larry was the son of the late June and Lee Edwards. He graduated from Bloomsburg University and went on to dedicate his career to teaching at Marcus Whitman High School. Larry was a natural mentor—steady, patient, and encouraging—and he touched countless young lives both in the classroom and as the high school bowling coach.
Larry lived a life rooted in connection. He was an active member of the Rushville Lions Club, the Middlesex Conservation Club, and the Elks Club, and he volunteered at events such as the LPGA and the Steam Pageant. Wherever help was needed, Larry showed up—quietly, reliably, and with a full heart.
He cherished simple joys: morning coffee in Rushville with friends, long conversations, and the comfort of familiar faces. He bowled in local leagues and loved heading to Manetti’s afterward with his bowling buddies. He played in a golf league, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and found peace at his cabin in the Pennsylvania mountains—a place where he felt closest to nature and to himself.
Larry also shared a lifelong bond with his brother, Ed. Their relationship was filled with laughter, loyalty, and the kind of easy companionship that only brothers can know. Larry treasured every visit, every story, and every moment spent together, and that love remained a constant source of joy throughout his life.
He had a playful spirit, too. Halloween was his favorite holiday, and he delighted in sharing elaborate electronic decorations that drew children from all over the neighborhood. Seeing their excitement brought him pure joy.
Above all, Larry was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband, a proud father, and a deeply cherished grandfather. His greatest happiness came from the people he loved and the moments he shared with them.
Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathy; his daughters, Lisa Hebert-Meritt and Carol Lea Payne, both of Roanoke, Virginia; his brother, Ed (Nancy) Edwards of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; and his three beloved grandchildren, Sienna Hebert, and Aiden and Colter Meritt, all of Roanoke, Virginia.
Larry never met a stranger, and he never hesitated to lend a hand. His warmth, generosity, and gentle humor will be carried forward by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy is one of kindness—a life lived with an open heart.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2026, when family and friends can gather to honor the man who brought so much kindness, humor, and generosity into their lives.
Memorial contributions in Larry’s name may be made to the Rushville Lions Club, P.O. Box 113, Rushville, NY 14544, the Middlesex Conservation Club, P.O. Box 655, Rushville, NY 14544, or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 135 Hamilton St., Penn Yan, NY 14527—organizations that reflect his lifelong commitment to community and service.
