Obituary
Leola Mae Lambert Melious passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025 at the age of 95 at Country Oaks Assisted Living in Burnet, Texas following a short illness. Born in Clifton Springs, New York on January 7, 1930, Leola was the daughter of the late Leonard Wellington Lambert and Mamie Marie Scott. Siblings include Edward (Eleanor) Lambert, and the late Donald (Elizabeth), Clara (Robert) Saunderson, Mildred (George) Woodley and Leonard Jr (Helen).
A 1947 graduate of Gorham Central School, Leola studied at the Ithaca (NY) Conservatory of Music. In 1950 she married the late Donald J. Wilson. Following graduation from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1964, Leola taught vocal music in the Victor (NY) Central Schools, then later in North Carolina. Throughout her life, Leola was deeply involved in school and church music, directing numerous choirs and leaving an indelible mark wherever she went. Her enchanting solos graced countless weddings and celebrations, touching the hearts of all who heard her sing.
In 1981 she married Earl Gillett Melious, who preceded her in death in 2008. They enjoyed many years together in upstate NY, sharing a love of music and family.
Leola lived fully and with great faith throughout her life. She wrote much about her spiritual beliefs, and shared them through her words and her music. In her last years, she played piano every day for the residents in her home residence, as well as for facility church services.
Leola is survived by her two daughters, Kathleen Jackson Wilson and Suanne Thurman Gersdorf (Chuck) as well as grandchildren Daniel and Mike Jackson (Jennifer), Matthew Wilson, and Andrew (Catherine) Thurman; she is also remembered by great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
Leola’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Country Oaks for the exceptional care she received over the past 6 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held in August in Upstate NY for family and friends.
Contributions in Leola’s memory can be made to the music program in her name at Victor Central School (Victor NY) through the District office.
