Obituary

Potter/Middlesex-Carl David Blood, age 87, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 21 from 5 – 8 P.M. at the Perkins-Ames Funeral Home in Gorham. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. at the funeral Home.

Memorial contributions in Carl’s name can be made to Ontario County Fair Draft Horse Barn/Program, P.O. Box 324, Canandaigua, NY 14424.

Carl was born to the late Martin and Helen (Hathaway) Blood on January 20th, 1938 in Canandaigua, NY. He attended Bloomfield, Clifton, and Shortsville schools.

Carl married Dorothy “Dot” Blood in 1964. They shared 58 wonderful years together- raising four children and countless animals, including horses, cows, chickens, pigs, dogs, and Siamese cats. Proudly boasting that he never lived further than 20 miles from Canandaigua, Carl and Dot moved to Potter in 1972 where they created a homestead that served as a hub for all of their adventures together.

During his lifetime, Carl worked a variety of different jobs, including farming, the canning factory, hauling milk, breaking horses, and working for NYS Dept. of Transportation, where he retired after 24 years of service. Carl and Dot also owned and operated Blood’s Potter Mall for several years and Hillbilly Acres Draft Horse Rides for over 30 years. Some of his most treasured memories were doing horse and wagon rides all around the area, including Sonneberg Garden’s Festival of Lights, Palmyra Canal Town Days, Waterloo Memorial Day Weekend, and many, many more.

In his free time, Carl enjoyed all things horse-related. He served as a 4-H leader and Ontario County Fairboard member, where he was the head of the Draft Horse Barn. He also enjoyed playing polo, trail-riding and camping with his many horse friends. He was a lifetime member of the Tri-County Draft Horse Club, serving as their president for many years.

Carl had the gift of gab and never met a stranger. He’d often ask people’s names and where they were from- inevitably knowing some relative, friend or neighbor. He enjoyed talking to everyone- sharing stories and past memories from his many adventures.

Carl is survived by his four children, Peggy Olig, Lisa Henderson, Connie Blood and Corey (Dora) Blood; 11 grandchildren, Nicole (Chris) Rasmussen, Peter Olig, Christopher (Amanda) Blood, Cierra (Donnie) Wagner, Shael (Mary) Blood, Lexie (Randy) Sinack, Tyler (Melissa) Henderson, Kiya (Dylan) Blood, Shonikka Blood, Braeden Perot, and Shaman (Aaron) Blood; 15 great-grandchildren; and his special canine and feline friends, Penny, Cuddles, and Tibby.

He is predeceased by his wife, Dot, his parents, and his sister, Betty.

What a wonderfully beautiful description of Carl who lived such a long and full life. We’ve always loved Carl for his big, welcoming heart. His loved ones clearly exhibit that same trait, which he must surely be proud of. May he join his sweetheart Dot in the kingdom of heaven. We will miss you and always think fondly of you.

My Deepest Sympathy to all of Carl's family. I first got to know Carl when he would come to get my grandpa Elmer Uhl's milk. He also used to work on the farm sometime when Grandpa needed extra help. He was always a fixture at the County Fair every year. My whole family always enjoyed running into Carl through the years. My son remembers the many times we would do a wagon ride with Carl at the many festivals he would be working at with the horses. I cherish my many memories of a special person.
