Obituary
Penn Yan – Kenneth R. Shaner, age 96, died Saturday, June 22, 2024.
Friends may call Thursday (June 27th) from 10 a.m to 12 Noon at the Perkins-Ames Funeral Home in Gorham. A Fireman’s Service and Celebration of Life will follow at 12 Noon at the funeral Home.
Burial will be in City Hill Cemetery, Dresden, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dresden Volunteer Fire Department, 3 Firehouse Ave., Dresden, NY 14441.
Ken was born May 15, 1928 in Newark, NY. He was the son of the late Albert and Edna Shaner. Ken started working as a teenager at the Market Basket in Geneva. He became a truck driver for the Market Basket, and then for other companies. He hauled coal from Pennsylvania for Sherwood Coal, then he drove for Acme Market, DeWitt’s Oil and finally he drove truck for the Town of Torrey until his retirement.
Ken was a proud life member of the Dresden Volunteer Fire Department, and was a founding member of the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters. He was also a member of the Penn Yan Moose Club, the Penn Yan Elks Club, and the Northern Central Fireman’s Association.
Ken and his late wife, Eloise, liked to travel and liked to have fun. They attended NASCAR races and Buffalo Bills games. They went on cruises and on Fireman’s trips. Ken also enjoyed fishing with his buddies.
Ken is survived by 5 children, Diana Knapp, Kathryn (Gene) Reed, John (Joyce) Shaner, Karen Towner and Steve (Michele) Shaner; 8 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Ken is also survived by 3 siblings, Donald Shaner, Elizabeth “Betty” Shaner and Janet Shaner.
Ken was predeceased by his wife, Eloise Shaner on Sept. 16, 2017; his parents, Albert and Edna Shaner; brother, Charles Shaner; sister, Marian (Richard) Stape; 2 sister-in-law, Vera Shaner; sons-in-law, Paul Knapp and Larry Towner; and 1 grandchild, Michelle Reed.
