Obituary

Linda Dorothea Oswald, age 72, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023.  She graduated from Marcus Whitman in 1969 and went to Rochester Business Institute.

Linda was proud of her “career in the service industry” and often commented on how under-appreciated those folks are. She worked at Sigsbees Giant Market in Elmira Heights for two decades and at Tops, True Value and BJ’s in Geneva.

Despite having many health challenges, Linda set the goal of walking 1-2 miles every morning through all weather and achieved that goal up until the day before she died. She died at Strong Memorial hospital of complications of an aneurysm.

Although she never married and lived  alone for most of her adult life, family and loyal friendship were very important to Linda. She was a frequent babysitter for her niece and nephews; and was a devoted caregiver to her mother and to her Aunt Marjorie Oswald Baker in their final years. During the decades she lived in Elmira, Linda  considered Harold and Joyce Wester and daughter Vickie Wester Westbrook as family and enjoyed keeping in touch with them always. Linda had a circle of friends that she called everyday.

Linda is survived by her sister, Gail Oswald; and her brother, Sam Oswald and his partner Regina Rugg; as well her brother’s children, Jeff (Katrina) Oswald, Jill (Randy) Oswald Mickey and Kirby (Tanya) Oswald , and their mother, Carol Oswald.

Linda never wanted a traditional funeral or memorial service and chose to donate her remains to the University of Rochester Anatomical Gift Program. She was proud of being able to help others even after death.  Her remains will be spread on Bristol Mountain by the Gift Program once her work for them is complete.

In lieu of donations, you may honor Linda’s memory by offering extra support to an aging person in your life, showing extra appreciation to a service provider, or by adding 1000 steps to your daily routine.

I only met Linda once, but I remember stories told by Gail, about what a wonderful, “trooper’ she was in helping her get settled in Dominica many years ago. I will pay attention to following her lead on being kind, helpful, appreciative and walking each day.

She cared for my grandmother, Marjorie Baker, which allowed her to continue living in her home throughout her life because of Linda and her serving and caring heart!! Thank you Linda for all you have done for our family and especially my Grandma Marjorie as you will be greatly missed. Your loving and caring spirit will live on through all of us that knew you!! Rest in Peace Linda, as you were loved and appreciated and I know you are smiling down on us from Heaven !!! We love you Linda !

Linda was such a loving niece to her Aunt Margie. She was a blessing, both a companion and a friend. They did many things together which helped Margie greatly during her later years. My family always enjoyed being with Linda and her extended family when we visited in the area. Linda will be remembered as a kind and loving person. From Carol & Rob Hallifax
